L.W. CALLAGHAN, Supt.
October 14, 1910.
Adjutant-General, Department of New York.
DEAR SIR AND COMRADE.- I have the honor to report to you that on Sunday morning, September 11th, a gentleman (apparently),
well dressed and prosperous looking and wearing the G.A.R. button came here from Richmond, Va., to me for help financially.
He gave his name as J.R. Johnson, 14th Brooklyn Regiment, and a member of William Hamilton Post of East New York. He stated
that he had been to North Carolina to purchase ties for some eastern railroad and was a professional railroad builder and had
built many railroads in different parts of the country; he said he arrived in Richmond that morning at 6 o'clock, had lost his
pocketbook containing $21 in cash and his railroad ticket to New York, and knowing that Superintendents of National Cemeteries
were Union Soldiers he came to me for help and got it to the amount of $6; he remained until after dinner; he said he could get
plenty of money in Washington and would remit. He has failed to do so. Not knowing whether there is a William Hamilton Post of
the G.A.R. or not in New York, have decided to write to you and make this statement and through you to notify the Posts f the
State of New York that if the said J.R. Johnson is a fraud he is a dangerous one. He dresses elegantly, is well educated and
has the appearance of a wealthy gentleman; manners unexceptionable. For the good of the Order, please investigate him and if found
to be a fraud expose him as far as possible. With highest regards I remain, yours in F.C. and L.
L.W. CALLAGHAN,
Superintendent.

MY DEAR COMRADE.- Your favor of October 18th is at hand. In reading the letter sent to you by the
Superintendent, he mentions that J.R. Johnson belongs to William Hamilton Post. In looking through our
books, we find no such Comrade ever belonged to Louis W. Hamilton Post No. 152, G.A.R. There is a Post in
New York city by the name of Alexander Hamilton. You may refer to them.

Col. Wm. S. BULL, Assistant Adjutant General, Department of New York, G.A.R., Albany, N.Y.:
DEAR SIR AND COMRADE.- A man who represented himself to be B.F. Patterson, a comrade of Post No. 51, Dept. of
New York, G.A.R., came to my office September 8, 1910, stating that he had lost his baggage and money and wanted
money for transportation to Washington, D.C., which I gave him. Later on I found that he had been soliciting from
other Comrades. He promised to return the money a day or two after his arrival in Washington. Have heard nothing
from him since.
Please ask the Adjutant of Post 51 his status. He claimed to be manager of an Electric Railroad in New York State.
His right hand is crippled so he cannot open it.
Please let me know as soon as possible if he is a Comrade in good standing or if they know anything about him, as I
intend to send his record to National Headquarters.
Yours in F.C. and L.,
