I certify, on honor, that this Muster Roll exhibits the true state of Captain George H. McLaughlin's Company of the 153d Regt. N.Y.S. Vols., for the period herein mentioned; that each man answers to his own proper name in person; and that the remarks set opposite the name of each officer and soldier are accurate and just.
Date - 18 October, 1862. Station - Fonda, N.Y. I certify, on honor, that I have carefully examined the officers and men whose names are borne on this Roll, their horses and equipments, and have accepted them into the service of the United States for the term of three years unless sooner discharged, from this 18th day of October, 1862. Alfred Foot, 1st Lieut. 14th Inf'y, U.S.A., Date - 18 October, 1862. Station - Fonda, N.Y. |
Note: Although the Civil War was to rage on for 2 1/2 more years and many more men would join, this muster roll appears to conflict with information given in "New York in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865", compiled by Frederick Phisterer, which work is long considered to be the authoritative reference on NYS's service in the Civil War. On page 493 of the second edition of his work (1890), Phisterer states that Company G of the 153d N.Y.S. Vols. was primarily recruited at Mooers, Altona, Essex and Plattsburgh, while Company H was recruited at Greenfield, Milton, Galway, Clifton Park, Ballston Spa, Moreau, Root and Wilson. The list above, which appears to be the regiment that Phisterer refers to as Company H, is the Adjutant General's Office official first NY State muster roll for Company G.
Some Helpful Links For Further Info Online: I have no further information about or familiarity with the 153d Regt., Company G, or the men listed above, being only the typist of a list that was kindly donated for our use by Fulton County NYGenWeb Coordinator Jeanette Shiel and City of Gloversville Historian James F. Morrison. If you find your relative listed, their military and pension records can be ordered directly from the National Archives.
